Time to Exonerate Pope Pius XII
Chuck Morse, author of On the Jewish Question - Karl Marx, Anti-Semitism and the War Against the West (On the Jewish Question )advocates the exoneration of Eugenio Pacelli, Pope Pius XII, the World War II era Roman Catholic Pontiff who posthumously underwent a Soviet led and financed character assassination. Morse calls for Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem, to install Pope Pius as a Righteous Gentile.
“As the High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur approach—a time for atonement—it is appropriate to correct this terrible wrong by recognizing the enormous contributions made by Pope Pius XII in rescuing Jews from Hitler’s Holocaust. The Catholic Church under the leadership of Pope Pius, and in the face of Nazi occupation, did more to rescue Jews and call out the evils of Nazism than did all other groups combined,” advises Morse.
Soviet era Romanian General Ion Mihai Pacepa, who was granted asylum in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter, has further confirmed, in his new bookDisinformation, what has been common knowledge for some time which was the existence of a well-financed and carefully implemented Soviet KGB smear campaign against Pope Pius XII.
The wartime Pope was first smeared as pro-Nazi in a KGB financed propaganda theatrical production called The Deputy which opened on Broadway in 1964, and then in numerous reviews, scholarly articles and a book called Hitler’s Pope.
Stalin’s motive for launching the big lie propaganda, which mobilized the services of leftist writers and intellectuals across the globe, was twofold:
Firstly, after the war, Pius was as staunch an anti-Communist as he was anti-Nazi during the war and essentially for the same reasons. After the war, the Soviet Union occupied several predominantly Catholic countries including Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. Pius’ influence, along with several of his bishops, including Cardinal Jozsef Mindszenty of Hungary, had to be diminished in order for Communism to succeed.
Secondly Stalin recognized a strong and moral Catholic Church as one of the main obstacles to international Communism in the world. Thus a plot was hatched to undermine the moral authority of the Catholic Church.
The truth is that Pope Pius XII and the Catholic Church were openly anti-Nazi, and the Catholic Church structure saved more Jews from Hitler’s Holocaust than did all other groups combined including Jewish groups. Pius was outspokenly anti-Nazi at a time when the Vatican was in the clutches first of the anti-Catholic Mussolini regime and then, in 1943, by Nazi occupation.
At great personal risk and operating behind enemy lines, Pope Pius XII arranged for tens of thousands of Jews in Rome to be sheltered from the Nazis in convents and homes. The church saved an estimated million Jews in Europe overall. The heroic actions of Pope Pius contrast favorably to other western leaders, including American President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who did little or nothing to rescue Jews.
