WASHINGTON, D.C.—Democracy is leading America down the path to ruin. Americans are infatuated with a form of government that is “the most overrated, overused, overvalued, and misunderstood idea in political life,” according to nationally syndicated columnist David Harsanyi. When “the people” have power, it takes only 51 percent of them to ban a stiff energy drink or a decent light bulb. Harsanyi delivers a provactive, irreverent critique of democracy in his new book, The People Have Spoken (And They Are Wrong) (Regnery Publishing; Hardcover; March 10, 2014; $27.99).
“Democracy” is not synonymous with “freedom.” Democracy is a process, not a panacea, and it’s only as good as the people who vote. In fact, the Founding Fathers knew that democracy can lead to tyranny, hence they built safeguards against it into the Constitution. Most voters are shockingly ill-informed, and a pure democracy allows public emotion to ram legislation into law based on scare tactics and majority whim. A centralized democracy allows the majority to determine what your healthcare looks like, what your children are taught, or whether you should ingest trans fats. Is that really their business?
