Should Soldiers Carry Concealed Weapons on Military Bases?

After the shooting at the Fort Hood base in Texas carried out by Army Maj. Nidal Hassan in 2009 and the shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, Congress debated a bill that would have allowed military personnel to carry concealed weapons. Congress rejected this common sense bill. Alan Gottlieb Founder Second Amendment Foundation asserts the obvious, “That had this law been passed, most likely lives would have been saved at Fort Hood this Wednesday.”

Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX), speaking on Fox News’s “The Kelly File” said, “I personally think, if you’re trained for combat, you ought to be able to carry a weapon,” The shooting left four dead and more than a dozen injured at the Texas military base.
McCaul, Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said “Al Qaeda and terrorists and jihadists are targeting our military bases…That is a fact.… The problem here, and with Fort Hood, the prior Nidal Hasan case, was that they couldn’t defend themselves because they were not allowed to carry weapons.”
Gottlieb stated, “It is insane to deny the right of military personnel, who are trained in the handling of firearms as part of their professional responsibilities, to carry weapons on, of all places, a military base. The idea of a gun-free military base is just nuts, notes Gottlieb. Congress and the military had better wake up before another catastrophe occurs.”
