UN Gun Trade Conference: Trojan Horse

Alan Gottlieb, Chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and Founder of the Second Amendment Foundation states that the United Nations Program of Action to Prevent, Combat, and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All its Aspects, known as POA, is a Trojan Horse. The secretive POA just concluded a series of biannual meetings at UN headquarters in New York.
The official focus of the POA is regulating the illicit trade of small arms and light weapons across international borders by drug gangs, organized crime syndicates and terrorists and this is a laudable effort. But the UN has a long track record of establishing agreements on easy matters and then expanding its authority and reach notes Gottlieb.
The main work of the POA has been to set up an international tracing initiative that could eventually lead to the registration of every firearm in existence. Such registration could be centralized in the hands of the UN which would constitute an end-run around American sovereignty. Theoretically, every American gun owner would have to  register with the UN which would, essentially, turn Second Amendment guarantees over to the discretion of an un-elected and unaccountable gang of international bureaucrats.
Since 2005, the POA has pressured its members to develop internal systems that would track the flow of small arms over their borders, an effort known as the International Tracing Initiative. It would not take much to eventually expand that data to include law-abiding gun owners and then consolidate it under the auspices of the UN.
The work of this agency, and all UN agencies, would be carefully examined and understood in the context of advancing American sovereignty and the sovereign rights of American citizens notes Gottlieb.
