No Surprise: Crime drops in Chicago while Gun applications surge
Now that Chicago is finally issuing concealed carry gun permits crime is dropping notes Alan Gottlieb,Chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and Founder of the Second Amendment Foundation. I've been saying this for years and now, once again, I've been proven right. My sense of jubulence over this victory for freedom is tempered, however, when I think of all the victims that might have been saved if Chicago had acted sooner notes Gottlieb.
The Washington Times has reported that burglary is down 20%, car thefts are down 26% and the homicide rate is at a 56 year low since the ban was lifted on concealed carry permits.
Gottlieb notes the obvious when he points out that with concealed carry the potential criminals don't know who might be armed when they consider engaging in a crime. This has proven over and over again to be a natural deterrent says Gottlieb.
The response by the public has been overwhelmingly positive with applications for gun training, which is a requirement for the permit, is surging.
Chicago is moving in the right direction as it responds to the previously unprecedented rise in crime and homicide that gave the city, with over 500 murders in 2012, the moniker of murder capital of America. Gun laws had been so restrictive that Museums in Chicago were banned from displaying unloaded antique guns.
At last, Gottlieb exults, the people of Chicago are no longer allowing themselves to be like sitting ducks for violent criminals as they take appropriate actions to defend themselves.
