President Donald Trump is already proving to be the most transformative president since Franklin D. Roosevelt. FDR is often praised for the direct actions he took during his first 100 days, much of which would later be rescinded by the Supreme Court. In Donald Trump’s case, the success has more to do with what he undid. Both men would lead movements that would change the way the country is governed and how citizens view the government.
In his agenda to put all Americans first, President Trump has rescinded executive orders and regulations that needlessly hamstrung business and labor. He ended the job and sovereignty killing Trans Pacific Partnership. He now seeks to re-negotiate the North American Free
Trade Agreement by using American leverage to make a better deal. He has approved the Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines which create economic opportunity on many levels and grant access to cheaper energy. He signed an executive order calling for companies entering contracts with federal agencies to use American products. He is protecting American industry and labor by calling for a tariff on Canadian lumber.
The predictable result is economic progress, jobs, investment, and a stock market that is making unprecedented gains. His executive order calling for the sun-setting of two bad regulations for every new one passed by Congress is now being imitated by 14 states. His budget proposal calls for increased defense spending that is countered by substantial reductions in most other agencies. The result is a budget that is smaller than present spending and this offers a stark contrast to the first year of President Barack Obama when a stimulus package, which borrowed almost a trillion dollars, propped up democratic political friends like Solyndra and big federal and state government agencies. Agencies are in the process of downsizing and reducing the national deficit, while continuing their mission of providing essential services.
American is stronger and more respected in the world as no longer do we engage in the type of amoral language of real politique. Other nations are following America’s moral lead as nations re-assert their own national sovereignty by likewise putting their own nations and people first. The globalism of the international liberal establishment and their agenda of turning the nation-states into subservient provinces of informal world government has experienced a serious setback. Americans, and people of other nations, are waking up to the importance of preserving and defending the progressive and democratic idea of the sovereign self-interested nation state. Trump struck tangible blows against Islamic terrorism in Syria and ISIS in Afghanistan.
So far, President Trump has not been successful at rescinding the authoritarian so-called
Affordable Care Act. This is because Trump, in the one major flaw in his administration so far, has been taken in by the establishment liberal Republicans in Congress led by Speaker Paul Ryan. President Trump, as the chief executive, needs to stride forth, rescind Obamacare, and offer a free-market solution that would protect all Americans by making heath care affordable. The safety net is already there in the form of Medicare, Medicaid, and state exchanges.
On the judicial front, President Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch, who is a patriotic, constitutional-minded judge, has been confirmed. Hopefully the Gorsuch
appointment will be followed by the appointment of other likeminded judges to the federal bench. This would codify the president’s agenda of promoting constitutional freedoms for generations.
Perhaps the most significant accomplishments of President Trump are less tangible and more spiritual in nature.
President Trump reminds us of what it means to be American. Donald Trump is a highly-accomplished man who is now giving back to his nation with his extraordinary public service. He is criticized by the establishment for his adherence to the constitution and its balance of powers which means that unlike his liberal predecessor Barack Obama, Trump doesn’t simply subvert the will of our elected representatives in Congress by enacting his program by executive order, through international bodies, by not enforcing the law or by subterfuge. Trump is revealing the progressive and democratic nature of such traditional American values as national and individual sovereignty, property, faith, family, and limited government.
